Then we went on line the Xtra newsletter said that your site was a good one to visit-so we did. Nice to find your site and great job with your page. Must be a great experience for you, though I guess not without it's hazards and moments. You all do a great job. I live at angawhai, Northland New Zealand. It is a coastal town with a many-tentacled estuary, harbour and many surf beaches. Been wet for ages though, with just the odd peep of the sun now and again - months now. The weeds are growing the lawn is like a hay paddock and because of a mild autumn the plants don't know what to do (fruiting, flowering, budding out od season) and spring bulbs are flowering and the roses haven't stopped blooming. I'm an old OAE from 61,62, and 63, and visited the pole when the great Chindit and our Governor General, Sir Bernard Fergusson called on the under-snow base. Consequently, when I saw your page it brought back many memories of life at McMurdo, Scott Base and Hallett. My husband went to Antarctica in the summer of 1988-1989 and was in the dry valleys at Lake Vanda where he was doing some Land Surveying. *Wrote...* Antarctic Support Activities, Summer Support Unit - Davisville, RI, 8/69 - 7/72. Three sojurns to the Ice, two at the Pole. Looks different now with the geodesic dome, though. Lived in a Jamesway topside one year, was privileged to live in the tunnels the next. Many exciting photos still rest in my photo albumns. Was there for the first Limblad Explorer visit, when Max Conrad did an "...unplanned open field gear up landing...", etc. Best food in the Navy, though. Chi-Chi still the best part of the trip!!!

*Wrote...* Actually I found you through the MSN Web site that I use as my home page. As an almost life long "desert rat" that has probably developed about half lizard blood I can't imagine the COLD that you're experiencing. I'd freeze-up and go into hibernation within the first week :-) I have a friend, Neal Bicknese, who in the 50's as a Navy SeaBee helped build the McMurdo station. It was fun to see your pictures of it now. I'd expect it's changed a lot because he said most of the buildings they put up were quonset huts. I'll send him your web site address so he can get a look at it as it is now. Just got a little inspirational blurb from another friend that would be hard to apply at the pole. It read "bloom where you're planted". Good luck with the rest of your incredible year!
